In honor of Logan C.

We were still residing in Guam in 2021 when Logan's accident happened. He was playing his favorite sport with his dad one weekend at our local baseball field and he suddenly fell into a ditch. Logan did complain at the start that he was beginning to feel some pain in his knee that he fell on but there were no no signs of bruising when examined it. A week later, we were at a close family friend's house for a party and Logan was playing like any normal kid would, and then suddenly he burst into tears and was lying on the ground complaining about his legs really hurting. The next day I took him to his PCP in Guam. She recommended a few walking tests, which looked very abnormal, so she made us go to get x-rays and from there the bad news started. Dr. Dina recommended we get him seen off-island as soon as possible. This was an issue that needed to be clarified right away. So, we did. Before we left Guam, the pain was getting worse and worse to the point where Logan was not able to really walk long distances or could not even stand on his legs for a certain amount of time as well.
In March of 2021, we arrived in Atlanta (CHOA in druid hills) because it was rated for the top hospitals for specialty medicine. We met with Dr. Murphy and felt relief when we heard it looked to be a bone infection but the treatment that he was going to undergo was like what cancer patients underwent, so it was still nerve-racking. Dr. Murphy gave us the plan and treatment time, which was not too long, so we anticipated staying here for no more than 6 months. Then one day logan had a bad nosebleed and consistent fevers, so we took him into the closest CHOA urgent care. They did the normal procedures, and the doctors noticed his blood counts and another level did not look normal, so they recommended that we go to the ER that same day. We drove from Kennesaw to Sandy Springs (Scottish Rite Campus) and rushed logan into the ER. In the emergency room was where the worst happened because they informed me that Logan was going to be transferred to the Aflac Cancer Unit upstairs. From there, I can never forget the time that Logan was diagnosed with this evil disease on that floor it was at 7:21pm on April 4th. Dr. E sat me down and informed me that Logan's blood cell count came back positive for Leukemia cells. I was so in shock that I don't know how I grasped all the information that she explained on the disease and a summary of his treatment plan that is upcoming. From there I didn't know how to be strong for my kid because I was just so torn that my son had this sickness that I couldn't take away with a simple dose of Tylenol or Motrin. Life threw a major curveball to my family, but we had some bad plays and then we had our homeruns with Logan's treatment. Now, here we are, four years later logan is going into his 7th month of remission and living the best life he could ever be blessed with. Even though Logan went through the worst possible side effects of the treatment from diabetes to seizures, he WON the fight and is finally enjoying his life as a seven-year-old

CURE's Kids

During September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, CURE Childhood Cancer hosts CURE's Kids. CURE's Kids empowers families to make an impact in the fight. Each day in September, we honor and remember children who have battled cancer or are currently in the battle as we partner with families to share their stories and ask the community to donate to critical research efforts.
