Our Radioactive Ocean

ORO Impact

More than 7 years after the accident at Fukushima, questions remain about how much radioactive material was (and continues to be) released and how far and fast it dispersed in the Pacific.  The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and our Japanese collaborators have been gathering samples since 2011, sometimes from as close as 1/2 mile from the damaged reactors.

But now we have too many samples and not enough funding to complete our analysis, which is why we hope you will support our lab's general operations.  In addition, long-term monitoring is expensive, requiring highly skilled lab personnel and sensitive detectors costing $75,000 or more.  Any amount you give is tax-deductible and will help ensure that we have the best resources available to tackle one of the most pressing questions in ocean science of our time.
