ABOUT the Chesapeake climate action network

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our mission is to build a diverse movement powerful enough to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation’s capital to inspire action in neighboring states, regions nationwide, and countries around the world.

We envision an equitable energy future where truly clean sources of power — efficiency, solar and wind — sustain every aspect of our lives, and dirty fossil fuels are phased out. Where communities now sacrificed to the fossil fuel industry – from South Baltimore to Southwest Virginia and beyond – have won the freedom to decide where their energy comes from and how it’s used. And where we’ve kept the increase in the global average temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius, protecting the most vulnerable communities in our region and the world from the worst impacts of climate change.  WHAT IS CCAN CURRENTLY UP TO

Maryland: We're focusing on tackling the strongest greenhouse gas, methane, and electrifying the state. Maryland’s 40 municipal solid waste landfills are the single largest source of methane pollution in the state, even larger than the gas industry. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is looking to update how it regulates landfills. Under the proposed approach, we would be adopting the strongest landfill methane regulations in the country. CCAN is engaging at every step of the process to ensure that the MDE issues strong landfill methane regulations. Our Electrify Maryland campaign focuses on building electrification in Maryland. Electrification is one of the most impactful and economically viable ways to approach emissions reduction and community improvement at the same time. We are working closely with local activists, organizations, and decision makers to highlight the benefits of electrification and move this work forward.

Virginia: We continue to challenge the construction of the fracked-gas Moutain Valley Pipeline, while also organizing behind a statewide fossil fuel moratorium and the expansion of public transportation infrastructure. At the same time, our team is supporting and providing input to efforts to build a more resilient Virginia, as it is uniquely threatened by both coastal and inland flooding due to climate change.

Federal: Over the past six months, our sister organizaion, CCAN Action Fund, has been busy advocating on Capitol Hill for 100% clean electricity. Looking ahead, we will continue our work holding polluters accountable, fighting against new fossil fuel infrastructure, and divesting from fossil fules.
